Day 1022

1/ Trump asked Attorney General William Barr to hold a press conference and say that he didn't break the law during his July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Barr, however, declined. Trump's request was made around Sept. 25 – shortly after the Trump administration released a summary of the July 25 call. Trump denied he asked Barr "to hold a news conference," calling it "MADE UP the story" and that "the Justice Department already ruled that the call was good." T is avoiding press questions, although there was a photo op scheduled for today to meet with some dissidents who escaped Communism, Korea etc. Just as the news was breaking about the $2 million dollar fines coming to T, and other harsh news for T, it was decided…no press.

On Wednesday, Trump had chosen not to speak with reporters who had assembled on the South Lawn to document his departure on Marine One en route to a campaign rally in Louisiana. The president has so often answered questions over the din of the helicopter’s rotor blades that the impromptu sessions have been dubbed “chopper talk.”

The small group of dissidents that met with Trump was left in the dark over the press access.

“We didn’t have any indication it was going to be with press or no press,” said Marion Smith, executive director of Victims of Communism, which organized the meeting. The group had successfully lobbied in 2017 for the Trump administration to formally recognize a national day of remembrance each year. This year, the day was timed to coincide with ceremonies commemorating the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9.

“I think there’s always a sensitivity to a meeting like this,” Smith said. “I’ve got to say, there was a level of back-and-forth [with Trump] that was more personal and more intimate than would have been possible with a press spray.”

Good now reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Update: quick check in with Violence Against Women Act,

The most contentious provision in the House-passed bill would lower the criminal threshold to bar someone from buying a gun to include misdemeanor convictions of domestic abuse of stalking. The law currently applies to felony convictions.

The authorization for the law ran out last year, although appropriations bills passed since then have continued funding for the programs.

So the Senate Republican’s are holding up this bill because they think it’s ok for your convicted stalker to buy a gun if it was just a misdemeanor charge. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Trump wants to attend May Day… the Russian version. He doesn’t know what it is. They are two different days.

May Day, the 1st, is the celebration of labor and workers. May 9th is when Russia took Berlin at the end of WWII, which has become their big annual military victory parade where they roll out the tanks and show off their military might.

Which one was Trump invited to? No telling, but it seems to be the one that is just a big showcase for dictators.

Ratifying the ERA is up there for me. With Virginia gone blue, we may finally get it done.
