Day 609

Updated 9/20/2018 8:42 AM PDT

1/ Senate Republicans plan to move forward with Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation despite sexual assault allegations by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Trump, in defending Kavanaugh, said it was "very hard for me to imagine anything happened" with Ford because Kavanaugh "is such an outstanding man." Sen. Chuck Grassley said a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing would begin at 10 a.m. Monday, and gave Ford a deadline of 10 a.m. Friday to submit prepared remarks if she plans to testify. While Ford has not officially declined the committee's invitation, her attorney has asked for a "full, nonpartisan investigation." (Wall Street Journal / Washington Post / New York Times)

More questionable news on Brett Kavanaugh…

Sounds like a nice group :smirk:

In addition to DKE, Kavanaugh also belonged to Truth and Courage, one of Yale’s secret societies for seniors. Among some students, the all-male club, which was popular with athletes, was known by the nickname “Tit and Clit.”

Truth and Courage fizzled out of existence in the early 2010s. But since Kavanaugh’s graduation in 1987, DKE’s reputation for mistreating women at Yale has only grown. Yale banned DKE from campus for five years in 2011 after videos circulated of fraternity recruits chanting “no means yes, yes means anal” in front of the University’s Women’s Center.

You wonder if these rules will be accepted. Hopefully they will.

Ford’s attorney also relayed her concern about security and asked that the committee work with her to ensure she would be safe if she agrees to testify.

Here are the other items Ford requested:

Wants to testify second and Kavanaugh to appear first;

Doesn’t want Kavanaugh in the room at the same time with her;

Prefers not to be questioned by outside counsel, but rather by the senators on the committee;

Would like the committee to subpoena Mark Judge, the other student Ford alleges to be in the room at the time of the assault, to testify;

Says each senator should have equal time questioning (already committee practice);

No time limit on her opening statement; and

Will appear at a public hearing but she would like to limit the number of cameras to pool coverage.

After the call concluded, Katz sent to the participants on the call a letter re-stating their position, according to a copy of the letter obtained by NBC News. Katz wrote that she wanted “to be clear” about their position. “The only issue I said was a deal breaker was that Dr. Ford cannot appear at a hearing on Monday for the reasons I described.” Katz adds that Ford can’t meet Grassley’s demand that she submit written testimony by 10 a.m. Friday, calling it a "non-starter."

This is the good old boys network. Even those who believe Ford are minimizing the trauma, like the “rough horseplay” comment. Kavanaugh and his friend Judge (ugh) probably were too drunk to remember. Their history of drunkenness should be enough to stop the process.Reagan’s nominee (Ginsburg) withdrew his name just because he smoked marijuana. Kavanaugh should have withdrawn his name.

At the very least, as a judge, Kavanaugh should be saying Ford has a right to her perceptions and recollection. That she should be heard respectfully, with sensitivity, in a safe situation. He should be the one to demand the Senate provide all that. He should volunteer not to be in the room.

He should behave as one would expect a judge to behave. As with Thomas, the utter ack of professionalism should be disqualifying.

The GOP has an agenda and they are not going to allow anything to get in their way.
