Immigration: issues and policy

Makes sense. You don’t announce raids ahead of time and expect them to succeed, and you don’t send agents out without warrants after weeks of the opposition prepping people on response and expect them to succeed either.

This was always about fearmongering. In fact, this whole DAY was about playing to his base:

:boom: Judge Furman reads Trump the riot act.

A New York federal judge has issued an order definitively blocking the Trump administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census in any form, despite the administration’s insistence it has abandoned plans to add a question on the census.

Judge Jesse Furman, in his two-page order, also indicated the seriousness with which the court will continue to monitor this controversial issue, saying,“The Court will retain jurisdiction in this case to enforce the terms of this Order until the 2020 census results are processed and sent to the President by December 31, 2020.”

Trump’s presidency may be making Latinos sick

President Trump’s presidency may be making some people sick, a growing number of studies suggest. Researchers have begun to identify correlations between Trump’s election and worsening cardiovascular health, sleep problems, anxiety and stress, especially among Latinos in the U.S.

A study published Friday used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to show an increased risk among Latina women of having babies born prematurely following Trump’s election. The new study is particularly powerful, experts say, because unlike ailments such as depression or stress that can be hard to quantify, births comes with hard data.

“You have a date when the baby should have been born and when it actually is. You have weight, length of stay at hospital. It’s extremely objective data,” said Kjersti Aagaard, an OB/GYN researcher at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital who was not associated with the study.

The Trump administration floated the possibility of admitting zero refugees next year during a recent meeting with officials from the Department of Homeland Security, State Department, the Pentagon and other agencies, according to sources familiar with the meeting.

A number of options are being discussed and the zero option already received pushback from some government officials, according to one source.

The crack down on refugees is in line with the administration’s immigration agenda which has sought to limit entry to the US. Earlier this week, the administration also put in place a regulation that bars most Central American migrants from seeking asylum in the US.

Help stop forced labor of detainees

Immigrants detained in a private prison in San Diego allege that they have been subjected to forced labor and threatened with solitary confinement or restricted visitation rights if they refused to work.

Reports of forced labor are not isolated to immigration detention centers. In Oklahoma, offenders sentenced to rehabilitation end up forced into labor on chicken farms , without any recourse or access to an actual recovery program. Prisoners in California are forced into labor and made to risk their lives fighting the state’s wildfires for a dollar an hour or less.

More than 100 immigrants were pepper-sprayed at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Louisiana this weekend, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

The detainees were pepper-sprayed at the ICE Processing Center in Pine Prairie on Saturday, just a day after guards pepper-sprayed more than 30 immigrant detainees at a separate facility in rural Louisiana.

The incident in Pine Prairie was not publicly disclosed.

The inmates at Pine Prairie — where more than 1,000 ICE detainees can be held at a time — were pepper-sprayed after they demonstrated in the center’s yard, the source said. The inmates were then taken to a separate part of the facility to be decontaminated.

After this story was published, Bryan Cox, an ICE spokesman, confirmed the incident in an email to BuzzFeed News.

Cox said that a "group of ICE detainees refused to depart the outdoor recreation area at the Pine Prairie facility Friday evening."

"After repeated attempts by facility staff and ICE personnel to disperse the group and restore orderly operation of the facility, a brief, calculated use of pepper spray was employed Saturday morning."

Dr. Christine Eady Mann works at an immigrant clinic and shelter in Laredo, that had convinced the CBP to bring migrants to them instead of abandoning them at a bus station with no money, food, water, or phone.

The CBP has reversed that policy. This thread details what is happening.

Yesterday, Dr. Claudia Mercado, the local physician who put the clinic together shared photos of migrants walking back into Mexico, as well as photos from the other side of the border of children sleeping on pizza boxes and people seeking shelter under bridges in Mexico.

This thread details it all.

Stephen Miller is an immoral and irascible person. His stoking this fire with his Alt-Right, read White Nationalist positions and setting policy is reprehensible. The only thing more which needs to be said is he needs to go.

How Stephen Miller Rode an Anti-Immigration Wave to the White House

Behind Mr. Miller’s singular grip on the Trump anti-immigrant agenda are forces far bigger than his own hostility toward the foreign-born.

Arriving in Washington as these forces coalesced, Mr. Miller rode the tailwinds with zeal and skill. Warning of terrorism and disturbed by multicultural change, he became the protégé of a Southern senator especially hostile to immigration, Jeff Sessions of Alabama. And he courted allies in the conservative media and immigration-restriction groups.

Mr. Miller, who declined to comment for this article, affects the air of a lone wolf — guarded, strident, purposefully provocative. But he has been shaped by the movement whose ideas and lieutenants he helped install across the government as he consolidated a kind of power unusual for a presidential aide and unique in the Trump White House.
