Well, this is… something. I can’t believe they would do this without backup plans in place… except, well, I can, since a similar situation happened in the Florida panhandle after the hurricane.

What a dolt. Next he’ll be proposing that we use coal to generate the steam.

President Donald Trump is ratcheting up the pressure on the Navy to return to the days of steam-powered catapults for launching jets from aircraft carriers — a multibillion-dollar shift that could take nearly two decades to achieve and would likely spur a clash with Congress.

Trump has spent two years criticizing the Navy’s decision to switch to an electromagnetic launch system for its newest class of aircraft carriers, citing delays in rolling out the technology and complaining that “you have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out.” But he kicked his old-tech obsession up a notch during his visit to Japan, telling U.S. service members he plans to order the Navy to outfit all its new carriers with steam catapults.

"So I think I’m going to put an order: When we build a new aircraft carrier, we’re going to use steam,” Trump told sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault shift USS Wasp at a Navy base south of Tokyo, speaking late Monday night U.S. Eastern time. He renewed his complaint that the new technology could be unreliable during battle. “We’re spending all that money on electric, and nobody knows what it’s going to be like in bad conditions.” …

While “Congress will continue to criticize the electromagnetic system alongside the president” because of cost overruns, Clark predicted, in the end lawmakers “will say what the Navy says, that this system is the future.” That’s because the electromagnetic systems could make it easier to launch new generations of unmanned aircraft and eventually even power high-tech self-defense weapons.

“No one is seriously talking about swapping EMALS with steam catapults — not even the U.S. Navy, which has studied EMALS extensively and believes EMALS has significant advantages over steam," said Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), using the Navy acronym for the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System. "Overhauling the Ford-class carriers for steam catapults would require a complete redesign of the Ford and the reconstitution of the industrial base for steam catapults, creating significant delays and cost overruns.

"This is not a feasible proposal, and I don’t anticipate Congress going along with this proposal and providing the funding to revert and refit the Ford class.”

In other words, this is just more bloviating from our President – wasting everyone’s time. And he should have bigger fish to fry.

Can’t find the link unfortunately, but I read just the other day in a review of a just published book on the “great man”, by one of his past minions, that that is how he would spend his day - fretting over minutiae. Like the fabric for the curtains in his next casino! Any one who has any sense, would see that the employment of an electromagnetic force field is far superior to a steam power launch. Maybe when he visited Japan, or when he visits China, he should take a ride on one of their Maglev High speed bullet trains.

The big difference between a maglev train and a conventional train is that maglev trains do not have an engine — at least not the kind of engine used to pull typical train cars along steel tracks. The engine for maglev trains is rather inconspicuous. Instead of using [fossil fuels]
(From Crude Oil - How Oil Refining Works | HowStuffWorks), the magnetic field created by the electrified coils in the guideway walls and the track combine to propel the train.

Essentially the same technology the USN want to use for their aircraft carriers.

Better still: Take him to a Kids science expo where they are sure to have a demonstration of rings whizzing back and forth - he can push the button and see the ring whizz over to the other side - he could play on it for hours!

Just got a chill looking at those words… but I like your efforts to bring it to an elementary school level as something to consider.

Great thinking but sadly not something our incurious one could even grapple with I am sure (Unless it could be payback to one of his many fat-cat donors, or children.)

The Next American Export: ‘Freedom Gas’

According to the Department of Energy, the next critical export from the United States is made from “molecules of U.S. Freedom.”

You may wonder, what are these molecules?

The technical answer is liquefied natural gas. Or, if you are in charge of energy policy for the Trump administration, “freedom gas.”

Keep in mind that Trump’s regime wants to slash the NWS’s budget, firing hundreds of meteorologists and decimating tornado research and early warning capabilities.

National Weather Service issues tornado watch for 24 MILLION people in seven states after 328 twisters were reported across the US in 12 days

  • National Weather Service (NWS) issued tornado watch for Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland on Wednesday
  • There have been 328 tornado reports across the US in just 12 days, according to weather officials
  • More than 500 tornadoes have been reported in the last 30 days, weather officials said on Wednesday
  • Forecasters warned that the tornadoes and heavy rains will ease by late Thursday but resume early next week
  • The deadly spate of weather has already killed one person and injured hundreds more in the Midwest
  • Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia have already been ravaged by barrage of powerful storms
  • Storms took aim at Kansas as about 20 twisters reportedly touched down in the state on Tuesday evening
  • The National Weather Service has received 934 tornado reports so far this year, up from yearly average of 743
  • Patrick Marsh, a meteorologist for the federal Storm Prediction Center said: 'We cannot say definitively one way or the other how climate change is impacting severe thunderstorms and tornadoes’

This story is misleading; the name WAS covered with a tarp before higher ups countermanded it, & this does NOT address sailors ordered to stay away (told to take the day off) or who did it.

WH wanted name covered up on USS John S. McCain during Trump trip, but Navy refused

“… warships in the harbor were invited to send 60 to 70 sailors to hear Mr. Trump’s address, with the exception of the McCain. When several sailors from the McCain showed up anyway, wearing their uniforms with the ship’s insignia, they were turned away.”

"A tarp was used to obscure the ship’s name, but when photos surfaced of the tarp Navy officials ordered it removed before Trump’s visit.

Then a barge was moved closer to the ship to block the name from being seen."

I would like to remark at the care and understanding that both the host and the producer take in not making this a white savior story but a story about making true alliances. Indigenous nations and communities have been overlooked far too long.

Of interest to watch. This story is unfolding as part of Donnie’s trade war. Kurt Eichenwlad has noted that the threat China delivered recently is one that many are watching nervously.

"The most important story of the day, the week and possibly the month is being largely overlooked in the wake of Mueller. China has just made one of the most terrifying declarations it ever has regarding the USA. If they arent bluffing, things are about to get very very ugly.

In an editorial in the People’s Daily - the organ of Chinese government, whose words reflect the policies of its leaders - it issued huge threats against the USA, along with the phrase that basically translates into “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

That has enormous import. This is not some throwaway line in China. This has huge historic import. It has been used only a few times in the official Chinese media, and always as a declaration of major threats. In 1962, it was used just before China went to war with India. The next time, in 1979, it was used before violence in Vietnam.

The times its been used against the West? I think it may be now. I certainly don’t know of any others. In the same editorial, China said it would restrict the import of “rare earths.” Again, that might sound odd. What it means is the standard name used in China for certain minerals it exports to the US, and as a major supplier, this cannot be replaced. These minerals are vital to the tech and defense industries. Essentially, they are proclaiming they are prepared to cripple major industries.

While the political world might be missing this, the stock market is not. This is the reason the market is collapsing. Now, you CANNOT read the importance of this off of the market. The entire issue is whether the Chinese are bluffing. Wall Street may decide they are, but what Wall Street believes is irrelevant. It is only what China intends.

#DimwitDon has, through his incompetence and arrogance, placed our economy and major industries in the hands of China. And if they pull the trigger, it will be ugly. This trade war is, was, & always will be stupid. There is a REASON why GOP was viscerally opposed to trade wars until they sold their soul to #DimwitDon. No, you effing moron, trade wars are not easy to win. And they can escalate very very suddenly in ways that are crippling."

Yeah there’s no walking this back…

Commenting on Chambers’ post, a Facebook user seemed to agree with him: "By giving the minority more rights than the majority. I hate to think of the country my grandkids will live in unless somehow we change and I think that will take a revolution.

The mayor was pragmatic on his response: “The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it’s bad to say but without killing them out there’s no way to fix it.

He thought was a private message… Even if it was private, he’s still calling for violence. WTF?!
