Virus shutdowns prompt sweeping questions about the future of news and entertainment

One week ago, Americaā€™s great shutdown began in earnest. None of us have experienced anything quite like this before. The shock is still sinking in.

The House Oversight Committee asked the Trump administration on Thursday to demonstrate how it plans to produce and distribute coronavirus testing kits to Americans.

The big picture: The testing capacity for the coronavirus has expanded in the U.S. as more commercial labs pledge to up production. But labs have been sounding the alarm about dwindling supplies ā€” and early testing failures left the country in the dark on how many people have been exposed to the virus.

What theyā€™re saying: ā€œWe are gravely concerned that, due to multiple missteps, people across the country have been unable to get tested as healthcare providers are being forced to ration the extremely limited number of tests available, significantly degrading our countryā€™s ability to conduct accurate modeling of the spread of the virus,ā€ House Oversight Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) asked, alongside other subcommittee chairs.

  • The Trump administrationā€™s coronavirus task force has fallen short of its promise to ship millions of tests to Americans by last week, the chairs point out.
  • The committee also wants information on how the administration plans to produce and ship coronavirus tests, which officials are involved in coordinating the effort, and documentation on the countryā€™s testing capacity.

Flashback: Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said last week that the health care system ā€œis not really geared to what we need right nowā€ when asked if there is one person in charge who can ensure that Americans who need coronavirus tests are receiving them.

  • ā€œThat is a failing. Letā€™s admit it. ā€¦ The idea of anybody getting it easily the way people in other countries are doing it ā€” weā€™re not set up for that. Do I think we should be? Yes. But weā€™re not,ā€ he said.

OKā€¦letā€™s check whatā€™s really being done. Or has T 'n co offered to give that job to the Governors

I feel like Iā€™ve read a million versions of this story, but I think this is the only one to really nail the realities. Hereā€™s a few choice quotes:

If no action to limit the viral spread were taken, as many as 2.2 million people in the United States could die over the course of the pandemic, according to epidemiologist Neil Ferguson and others at the Imperial College Covid-19 Response Team.

Adopting some mitigation strategies to slow the pandemic ā€” such as isolating those suspected of being infected and social distancing of the elderly ā€” only cuts the death toll in half to 1.1 million, although it would also reduce demand for health services by two-thirds.

Only by enacting an entire series of drastic, severe restrictions could America shrink its death toll further, the study found. That strategy would require, at minimum, the nationwide practice of social distancing, home isolation, and school and university closures. And such restrictions would have to be maintained, at least intermittently, until a working vaccine is developed, which could take 12 to 18 months at best.

Here is another thing that hasnā€™t been spelled out in our national conversation about flattening the curve: There will probably be more than one curve.

Like the bumpy hills some foresee in coming months, the 1918 pandemic hit America in three waves ā€” a mild one that spring, the deadliest wave in fall and a final one that winter.

With each wave came a cycle of denial, devastation, community response finally kicking into overdrive ā€” followed by finger-pointing and blame among leaders and the public.

California Governor Issues Emergency Order: Stay home except for essentials needs :mask:

California ordered its nearly 40 million residents to stay at home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, marking the first statewide mandatory restrictions issued in the United States.

Nineteen people have died and more than 900 have tested positive for the disease in the state. Gov. Gavin Newsomā€™s order goes into effect Thursday evening and remains in place until further notice.

Under the order, essential services such as gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores and delivery restaurants will remain open. So will banks, local government offices that provide programs and services, and law enforcement agencies.

Nonessential services such as dine-in restaurants, bars, gyms and convention centers will shut down.

Hereā€™s the official web page outlining the order:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued a statewide stay-at-home order starting Thursday evening. ā€œThis is a moment we need to make tough decisions," Newsom said at an online news conference. It is the strongest statewide restriction yet aimed at stemming the spread of the coronavirus. The announcement follows similar orders issued in the past few days across the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles.

Fact check: Trump wrongly claims FDA ā€˜approvedā€™ drug chloroquine to treat the coronavirus

By Daniel Dale

Updated 8:51 PM ET, Thu March 19, 2020

President Donald Trump claimed during a White House briefing on Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration had approved the ā€œvery powerfulā€ drug chloroquine to treat coronavirus.

Chloroquine is used to treat malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

ā€œItā€™s shown very encouraging ā€“ very, very encouraging early results. And weā€™re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. And thatā€™s where the FDA has been so great. They ā€“ theyā€™ve gone through the approval process; itā€™s been approved. And they did it ā€“ they took it down from many, many months to immediate. So weā€™re going to be able to make that drug available by prescription or states,ā€ Trump said.

He added: "Normally the FDA would take a long time to approve something like that, and itā€™s ā€“ it was approved very, very quickly and itā€™s now approved, by prescription."

Facts First : Chloroquine has not been approved by the FDA to treat the coronavirus ā€“ and nor has any other drug, the FDA made clear in a post-briefing statement that said "there are no FDA-approved therapeutics or drugs to treat, cure or prevent COVID-19."

In the video accompanying this article, CNN medical correspondent, Elizabeth Cohen, points out that this drug has been shown to be ineffective against other viruses. The Chinese have claimed that it was helpful against coronavirus, but have provided no supporting data. Not only that, there is a ā€œvery narrow margin between a safe and a toxic dose.ā€

Trumpā€™s quack claims are dangerous. Lets hope that they donā€™t spark a black market in this drug because naive believers could wind up ODing on it.

Appallingly, later in the in the day, Trump doubled down on his lie (as he so often does) ā€“ he repeated it at a briefing with governors. Hereā€™s the video. It starts with his usual word salad in which he touts the drug while offering no sources for his claims and then he concludes by definitively stating that the FDA has approved the drug ā€“ when, infact, it has not approved the drug for treating coronavirus.

Speaking of drugs, this is an interesting story to watch, though itā€™s uncertain if it will be of help, as the site even admits the drug is not currently cleared as a treatment, though it is being tested.

Many of us speculated that Dr. Fauci had disappeared from public view because Trump didnā€™t like him getting all the attention.

It would seem many of us speculated correctly:

On the STOCK scandal, it would seem Feinstein and Johnsonā€™s sell-offs were legitimate, and Feinsteinā€™s was both in a blind trust and she lost money on the deal, while the other three are definitely shady and should be looked at.

Yes, I imagine T canā€™t be upstaged.

If it is a petty grievance T will amplify every part of it with his anger.

I just watch Fauciā€™s body language (arms crossed, head down) throughout these current press conferences. That means T is lying, boasting, branding etc. It is my ā€˜truth barometer.ā€™

Pence gives T his assurances/strokes by praising him alwaysā€¦so Pence always gets an ā€˜All clear.ā€™
