He did it on his own, though! He’s just that much of a mensch.
When someone doesn’t WANT to believe in something (because, for instance, it might invalidate some of their own self-worth), then they will find/manufacture/elevate any fact-let that will let them continue to believe.
People who want to believe that Trump is good/nice/good-for-america/good-for-the-world will find reasons to continue/justify that belief.
For sake of balance - the same is true of trump-sceptics.
