Day 725

Updated 1/14/2019 12:05 PM PST

1/ The FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation into whether Trump had been working on behalf of Russia after he fired Comey in May 2017. Law enforcement officials became concerned that if Trump had fired Comey to stop the Russia investigation, his behavior would have constituted a threat to national security. Counterintelligence agents were also investigating why Trump was acting in ways that seemed to benefit Russia. No evidence has publicly emerged – yet – that Trump was secretly taking direction from Russian government officials. Sarah Huckabee Sanders called the report "absurd" and claimed that, compared to Obama, "Trump has actually been tough on Russia." (New York Times / CNN)

Gates will have a Sentencing Memo (Joint Status) filed by Mueller by 1.15.19.

This was delayed in Dec, when Mueller had already delayed Manafort’s and Flynn’s Sentencing Memo.

Both sides agreed to give the court another update by January 15 on his cooperation and whether they’re ready to move toward sentencing for Gates, who pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy against the U.S. and making a false statement in a federal investigation.

There are areas to be worried about…and this is one of them. T’s thoughts and perhaps actions to get the US out of NATO.

An incendiary issue for many Americans to contemplate who know the history of what NATO stands for - creating international bonds with our Allies for the purpose of protecting one another.

This is the scary part of our unwitting/witting Russian ally Prez…but a grounds for impeachment.

WASHINGTON — There are few things that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia desires more than the weakening of NATO, the military alliance among the United States, Europe and Canada that has deterred Soviet and Russian aggression for 70 years.

Last year, President Trump suggested a move tantamount to destroying NATO: the withdrawal of the United States.

Senior administration officials told The New York Times that several times over the course of 2018, Mr. Trump privately said he wanted to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Current and former officials who support the alliance said they feared Mr. Trump could return to his threat as allied military spending continued to lag behind the goals the president had set.

Now, the president’s repeatedly stated desire to withdraw from NATO is raising new worries among national security officials amid growing concern about Mr. Trump’s efforts to keep his meetings with Mr. Putin secret from even his own aides, and an F.B.I. investigation into the administration’s Russia ties.

BUT this is something to appreciate…T can be shielded from it.

Mr. Trump’s threats to withdraw had sent officials scrambling to prevent the annual gathering of NATO leaders in Brussels last July from turning into a disaster.

Senior national security officials had already pushed the military alliance’s ambassadors to complete a formal agreement on several NATO goals — including shared defenses against Russia — before the summit meeting even began, to shield it from Mr. Trump.
