A little backtrackingā€¦now Pence will have under him another expert Ambassador Debbie Birx, who handled the global HIV crisis as ā€œWhite House coronavirus response coordinatorā€, as well as Cabinet member Azar in positions of power.

In the end, President Donald Trump got a coronavirus czar ā€” without having to call it a czar.

Vice President Mike Pence, whom Trump appointed Wednesday to lead his coronavirus response, announced a global health official as the ā€œWhite House coronavirus response coordinatorā€ ā€” installing a czar-like figure under him to guide the administrationā€™s response to the outbreak after a protracted public dance around how to display the power of the federal bureaucracy to the American people.

The new role will put Ambassador Debbie Birx, who has served since 2014 as the U.S. governmentā€™s leader for combating HIV/AIDS globally, at the center of what now appears to be three leaders of the government response. Trump revealed in a news conference Wednesday evening that Pence would head up the administrationā€™s management of the coronavirus, overseeing a task force nominally led by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. Birx will report to Pence but serve on the task force that Azar chairs.

More than a ā€˜testā€™ for Tā€™s competenceā€¦a nation is in need of good information.

And so, with the first case of coronavirus not tied to foreign travel being announced in California on Wednesday, Trump finds himself grappling with a crisis for which his record suggests he is particularly ill suited to respond.

ā€¦

Trumpā€™s charge is to calm, rather than con, a frightened nation. But now in his fourth year in office, he lacks credibility with broad swaths of the country ā€” the sort of safety net that many of his predecessors could fall back on in moments of crisis.

Stephen Morrison, a senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he directs the centerā€™s global health work, said that while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has done ā€œa fine jobā€ in regularly updating the public with guidance, ā€œthe trick and the missing part is the communications at a higher level to the American public, and thatā€™s from the president and the presidentā€™s designated surrogates.ā€

Welcome to the #gaslight express.

We have misspelled lies that claim Trumpā€™s racist border closings and flight bans are helping (theyā€™re not).

image

We have blaming the media for the panic and lack of leadership he is causing, not to mention the laughable claim that CNN is ā€œfar left.ā€

image

And we have totally false claims that Pence and his cadre of Trump cronies have everything under control and numbers are going down when the exact opposite is clearly happening.

Why in the world would Pence cancel this? Big dollars is why.

The countryā€™s new point man on coronavirus response, Vice President Mike Pence, is expected to travel to Florida on Friday ā€” but not on a public health mission.

Instead, Pence is headed to the moneyed barrier island town of Longboat Key, where heā€™ll be the main attraction for Congressional Republicans in one of their biggest fundraisers of the year.

Itā€™s $2,500 to get in the door and $5,000 to take a picture with the vice president, according to an invite obtained by the Tampa Bay Times . And $25,000 buys dinner with him, too.

Absolutely shameful. The second Pence was unexpectedly (and astonishingly) appointed by Trump to command our national assault on the coronavirus, he should have cancelled every single event that was not focused on that goal. Our entire nation is at risk and heā€™s dawdling at a fundraiser?! Outrageous. And as soon as Pence showed he wasnā€™t making a serious effort, Trump should have chastised him, or more appropriately, fired him from that position. Is Trump serious about helping us face this crisis or is he fiddling while Rome burns? :violin: :fire:

And hereā€™s what Trump said today as he was supposedly ā€œrallyingā€ the nation:

Itā€™s going to disappear. One day itā€™s like a miracle, it will disappear. And from our shores, you know, it could get worse before it gets better. Could maybe go away. Weā€™ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.

Ahh, now I can sleep soundly.

Just imagine, would Britain have made it through the Nazi bombing blitz if, instead of delivering his stirring ā€œWe shall fight them on the beachesā€¦ā€ speech, Churchill had said this:

The Nazis are going to disappear. One day itā€™s like a miracle they will disappear. And from our shores, you know, the bombing could get worse before it gets better. Could maybe go away. Weā€™ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.

Yeah, that would have inspired the Brits to give it their all. And weā€™d still be quoting it today.

Unfortunatelyā€¦all for show @Keaton_James

"Taskedā€™ means appear as if you are trying to attack this potentially catastrophic situation.

Being the mouthpiece of the nationā€™s influenza onslaught is so fraught with pesky fundraisers here, and swatting away experts there, and itā€™s just his warm-up.
Old wooden-face Pence will do his ā€˜duty.ā€™ - whatever the F that means.

Churchill had some gutsā€¦these guys, poses.

ARRRRGGGGHHHH.

38% of Americans are avoiding Corona beer amid coronavirus outbreak, survey finds

When a Pandemic Meets a Personality Cult

So hereā€™s the response of the Trump team and its allies to the coronavirus, at least so far: Itā€™s actually good for America. Also, itā€™s a hoax perpetrated by the news media and the Democrats. Besides, itā€™s no big deal, and people should buy stocks. Anyway, weā€™ll get it all under control under the leadership of a man who doesnā€™t believe in science.

Mick Mulvaney says the coronavirus will probably make some schools close. But donā€™t worry. Also, blame the media. And the Democrats.

Glad that Fauciā€™s words are filtering out to the nationā€¦via someone who was privy to what was said in front of US House of Representatives. We need the experts please.

WASHINGTON, Feb 28 (Reuters) - A senior U.S. health official told lawmakers that the coronavirus that is spreading globally is unlikely to disappear next year and that many more cases should be expected in the United States, according to a source who attended a briefing on Friday.

Anthony Fauci, who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases, also told House of Representatives members in a closed briefing that the United States currently does not have enough coronavirus testing resources.
