The State of the State Department: It’s a Shambles
Friday night on The Rachel Maddow Show, Andrea Mitchell made some startling remarks about the dismal job Trump has done staffing the State Department. I told myself things couldn’t possibly be as bad as she described, but, yes indeed they are. Here’s the status of the top eight positions at State:
-
Secretary of State: Recently-fired Rex Tillerson is still “technically” Secretary of State, but he has abrogated all his responsibilities to John Sullivan, Deputy Secretary of State. So at this time, in reality, we have no Secretary of State. Instead, we have a Deputy Secretary of State who is “filling in.” On March 31, Tillerson’s last day, Sullivan will officially become Acting Secretary of State. He will hold that position until congress confirms a new Secretary of State.
-
Deputy Secretary of State: John Sullivan will continue in this post until March 31 when he will be promoted to Acting Secretary of State. The White House has not announced if anyone will assume the role of Deputy Secretary of State at that time.
-
The Six Under Secretaries: One post is held by Tom Shannon, who is confirmed, but has announced he is retiring. Another post is held by Heather Nauert, who is newly appointed and serves in an “acting” capacity; she was previously a spokesperson for the department, and before that was with Fox News; she has no diplomatic experience. The other four Under Secretary positions are vacant with no word on when they will be filled.
Trump has had more than a year to get this house in order, yet here we are. Four of the top positions are vacant, three are acting, and only one is confirmed, but that person is leaving. God help us if we face an international crisis that requires diplomatic expertise.

I can find almost no reporting on these positions. Here’s the State Department page that confirms they are vacant, but it includes no information about any steps being taken to fill them. If anyone finds some reporting on these vacant positions, please share. Thanks!
