Remember the huge scandal involving the outrageously padded $300 million Puerto Rico power contract? It was awarded to a company with only two employees. Where was the company based? Whitefish, Montana – hometown of Zinke. Zinke knows the owner of the company – and Zinke’s son once worked for him. When this money grab was uncovered, the contract was suddenly yanked. Zinke and the Administration told everyone, “There’s nothing to see here. Return to your accommodation units.” Then . . . radio silence.

I’m still wondering why this nefarious plot, which on its face has every appearance of a massive graft scheme, was not vigorously investigated – it warranted congressional hearings. When we win back the House, we need to put this Zinke scandal back under the microscope.

Whitefish Energy is based in Whitefish, Mont., the home town of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Its chief executive, Andy Techmanski, and Zinke acknowledge knowing one another — but only, Zinke’s office said in an email, because Whitefish is a small town where “everybody knows everybody.” One of Zinke’s sons “joined a friend who worked a summer job” at one of Techmanski’s construction sites, the email said.

They aren’t going after the Trump administration, per se, but this is close enough to Trumpville to warrant mention here. BTW, this is totally separate from all the other investigations into Trump & Co’s shady dealings.

Wow – when I posted this, it seemed like a pretty obscure story (at least relative to the hurricane of breaking news that’s been tearing off roofs for the last couple days). However, according Rachel Maddow, who devotes a goodly portion of her show to the implications of this subpoena, this is shaping up to be a major-mega bombshell with shock waves that threaten to rumble Trump Sr., the Trump Organization, and the Trump Campaign – as well as Ivanka, Trump Jr., and Eric.

I imagine that by tomorrow there will be more reporting on this. The issues are somewhat complex – I can’t explain them anywhere near as well as Maddow so, if at all possible, watch her show tonight. If you don’t have access to the show, then check back tomorrow and I’ll try to locate some of the articles that Maddow’s research and commentary are sure to trigger.

Some footnotes:

  • Rachel spins a great story on this – she really knows how to build suspense – it’s like listening to someone read a best-selling detective story.

  • The story includes a thumbnail bio of a fascinating new super-hero in the cast of characters investigating Trump: Barbara Underwood – an amazing legal mind who has been quietly achieving remarkable results in the halls of justice for many years and who has now suddenly been thrust into the limelight.

  • Any criminal charges against Trump and his minions that grow out of this particular investigation will be at the state level and, hence, unpardonable by the President (whoever that might be a year or so from now).

I remember a video of this event during which Keith Schiller grabs and tears up the protesters’ signs. He appeared to me to be on what could be called a “rampage.”

T’s lawyers are trying to get Stormy Daniel’s defamation lawsuit tossed out…countering that she is profiting from all the publicity generated by her expose.

Classic counterpunch route on T’s part.

LOS ANGELES (CN) – An attorney for President Donald Trump asked a federal judge on Monday to toss porn star Stormy Daniels’ defamation lawsuit, arguing she can’t claim to have been damaged by a presidential tweet when she’s making big money from her newfound fame.

In a motion to strike Daniels’ suit, Charles Harder of Harder LLP firm said Daniels has become famous due to her legal tussle with Trump and has capitalized on it by “embarking on a nationwide tour of adult live entertainment venues” where she is regularly paid four times her normal fee.

Harder said Daniels’ nationwide “Make America Horny Again” strip club tour is an “obvious parody” of Trump’s campaign slogan and designed to generate further interest in her tour.

“Plaintiff is making money – not suffering economic harm – as a result of her disputes with the president,” Harder wrote in the filing.

A federal judge in Manhattan has ruled that the largest of the six lawsuits against the new citizenship question on the 2020 census can move forward in court.

More than two dozen states and cities, plus other groups and individuals, are suing the Census Bureau and the Commerce Department, which oversees the census, to get the question about U.S. citizenship status removed from forms for the 2020 census. Judges in Maryland and California are deciding whether to dismiss similar legal challenges.

While U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman has dismissed the plaintiffs’ claim based on the Enumeration Clause — the constitutional requirement of a national head count every 10 years — Furman has ruled that other claims in the two cases before him can proceed.

Wilbur Ross spoke with Steve Bannon, President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, before including on the 2020 census a question about people’s citizenship, the Justice Department said in a court document that appears to contradict what the commerce secretary told Congress.

The disclosure came in a lawsuit by more than a dozen states, cities and advocacy groups seeking to block the U.S. from asking the question, claiming it’s discriminatory and designed to reduce the accuracy of the count by cutting participation. The Justice Department’s filing, which was posted online Thursday by the New York Attorney General’s office, was in response to questions from the plaintiffs.
